Ethical Ministry Training

Those who offer leadership in the church need to be aware of what it means to be accountable within the UCA. The two-day Ethical Ministry course has four main objectives:

  • To increase awareness of the need for healthy and appropriate boundaries in the clergy, pastor/congregant or spiritual teacher/student relationship
  • To illustrate the impact of appropriate vs inappropriate boundaries in promoting effective ministry and teaching
  • To provide ministers, pastors and spiritual teachers with guidelines and suggestions for developing appropriate boundaries and necessary self-care strategies
  • To remind ministers, pastors and spiritual teachers that ministry is not about them, but about the people in their care.

The Ethical Ministry two-day course and two Presbytery-run half-day refresher courses per year are mandatory for all who come under the UCA’s Code of Ethics.

Living Our Values

Living Our Values is a great way to get to know the UCA. Having a sound understanding of who we are, how we operate, and what we believe in will have a profound influence on how effectively people can engage with, and contribute to, our church.

This course is recommended for all church and presbytery members, employees, church council members, elders, lay preachers, and leaders in the UCA.

Living Our Faith

The Living Our Faith Series seeks to equip and encourage an active faith, offering groups and congregations the chance to learn together with a view of making a difference to their local communities. Subjects include Old Testament, New Testament, Exploring Theology, Proclaiming Jesus Christ and Worship Leading & Preaching.

Each subject can be studied as an intensive (often over two weekends) or as a week-long course.

While the Living Our Faith series is one pathway leading to accreditation as a Lay Preacher within the UCA, its real focus is to bring people together in collaborative groups to learn of the wonder and grace of our God – and then send them back to their communities, inspired and equipped to bring it all to life.

Understanding the Sacraments

Understanding the Sacraments is an invitation to explore the history of Baptism and Holy Communion, and discuss what God offers to us as we participate in them. Issues like infant baptism, offering communion to children, and being baptised more than once are explored as we examine how the Uniting Church has discerned God’s leading in these acts of grace.

The course also looks at Uniting Church liturgy and a variety of other resources, as well as inviting the sharing of our own personal sacramental experiences.

Understanding the Sacraments is offered to all people interested in learning more about how God comes to us in the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion.

The four-day course is a pathway to presbytery authorisation as a Lay Presider for communion and baptism. It is also an ideal opportunity for a small group, faith community, bible study group, or congregation to spend a block of time exploring the sacraments.

Safe Church Awareness

The Uniting Church affirms that all people are made in the image of God. The Uniting Church commits itself to the care, protection and safety of all people with whom it comes in contact. As a community of faith, we are committed to providing a safe environment for both children and adults to encounter God, to develop relationships as part of a community and to grow in faith.

Congregations and their members who work with children and young people in the Uniting Church play important parts not only in the support, care, and spiritual nourishment of the next generations, but in actively looking out for their safety and protection.

To help congregations in understanding their obligations and resources to assist, the Synod runs Safe Church Awareness Workshops and provides online access to a collection of templates and policies for congregations to make use of.
