The Work of the Presbytery

The Presbytery is the regional forum for Congregations to act together.  These joint activities include: ministerial settlements, assistance and encouragement for Mission, approval and encouragement of candidates for ministry, assistance with and approval of property matters, and the pastoral care of ministers.

Representatives from every Congregation determine the Presbytery policy in regular meeting.  Full financial information is provided to the congregational representatives who vote on the budget, the amount of the Presbytery levy and the reception of financial reports.

We employ David Hay as full time Executive Secretary.  Revd Neil Ericksson is our Presbytery Chairperson and a new appointment is due for our Mission and Evangelism Officer.

The Presbytery has oversight of the Tertiary Chaplains and Lay Mission Workers for the Tertiary Chaplaincies in the University of Sydney, the University of NSW and the University of Technology.  However financial administration is now done by the Board of Education.

Our property includes a residence at 400 Abercrombie Street Chippendale and the buildings in Ultimo, the Church, the Hall and the Presbytery Office.  We pay insurance and maintenance on these.  We also rent accommodation for one of our Ministers.

The Presbytery Levy uses a formula based on the number of Congregational representatives to Presbytery.  There is provision for reductions for new Congregations and a maximum amount cap.  There is one unit per representative. The amount is $1032/unit/year from July 2011, a 20% increase, to restore finances after significant and ongoing repairs on the Presbytery Residence.
